Laser Associations In India

Some of the associations related to lasers are given below. The list is not exhaustive. Suggestions about any addition / correction are welcome.

Indian Laser Association

The Indian Laser Association (ILA) is an association of persons interested in Laser technology and applications. The ILA is non-profit multidisciplinary professional organization. The association aims to promote education, advancement and applications of laser science and technology in India, through various activities such as organization of seminars, symposia and training courses; publications of books and journals; and promotion of active interaction with other professional institutions especially in the field of medicine and engineering.

Optical Society of India

The Optical Society of India (OSI) was founded in the year 1965. The society was started in a modest way with only a few dedicated members, but soon gained momentum and developed in a rapid pace to what it is to day. The purpose of the society as spelled out in its constitution, is: to promote and diffuse the knowledge of optics in all its branches-pure and applied, to encourage, organize and coordinate research activities in the field of optics and to organize meetings, seminars and conferences on varied aspects of optics, and to co-operate with other scientific organizations in all matters of national scientific importance.

The areas being pursued include High power lasers viz., Combustion Driven High Power Gas Dynamic Laser (GDL), Chemical Oxy-Iodine Laser (COIL); Low Energy Solid State Lasers; Nd-YAG Laser Designator cum range finder; Beam Control Technologies; Electro-Optic Countermeasures; Laser Materials; Laser-related Optics, Thin Film Coatings, Laser Crystal / Glass and NLO materials.

IEEE Lasers and Electro-Optics Society (LEOS)

Effective January 1, 1985, Quantum Electronics and Applications Society (QEAS), was renamed as to the IEEE Lasers and Electro-Optics Society (LEOS). In keeping with the explosive growth of the lasers and electro-optics field, LEOS membership increased by more than 65 percent. The CLEO/IQEC and OFC conferences that LEOS cosponsors maintained their worldwide positions of preeminence and continued to set new records in attendance and revenue. Both the IEEE Journal of Quantum Electronics and the Journal of Light wave Technology continued their traditions of excellence with many fine special issues devoted to particular topics of interest. The globalization of LEOS continued in 1996 with an additional two chapters in Europe and with 45% of the LEOS membership now residing outside the US. To effectively serve this increasing global membership, additional chapters were initiated all over the world including Asia & Pacific. In India the Calcutta chapter is being looked by Professor P. Basu of Institute of Radio Physics and Electronics and Dr. R.G. Gupta of DOE is chairman of Joint IEEE Chapter of Aerospace & Electronic Systems Society, Communications Society and Lasers & Electro-Optics Society. LEOS is publishing Photonics Technology Letters, Journal of Quantum Electronics, Selected topics in Quantum Electronics and Journal of Light Wave Technology.
